The Best Investment You Will Ever Make Is in Yourself

Forty weeks ago, this column began with one simple belief: every woman has the right to understand, manage, and grow her own money. Not through someone else's account. Not with someone else's permission. Not only after she starts earning or when someone finally tells her she is ready. Simply because it is hers.
When I sat down to write that first piece, I knew I wanted to make finance feel less intimidating. I wanted to prove that money is not a language reserved for experts, bankers, or investors. It is a life skill. And every woman deserves to speak it with confidence.
Looking back today, I realise we were never really talking about mutual funds, insurance, taxation, or the share market. Every topic, whether it was inflation, SIPs, gold, retirement, or wills, was really helping us answer one larger question: how do we become individuals who are confident enough to make our own financial decisions? Good investing does not begin with finding the best product. It begins with understanding what your money is meant to do for your life. Once that purpose becomes clear, the decisions become far less confusing.

The biggest surprise for me was what happened after the columns began appearing every week. Your emails started arriving. Some asked thoughtful questions. Some challenged my assumptions. Many simply shared the first financial step they had finally taken. Those letters became my favourite part of every week because they reminded me that financial literacy is never about knowing everything. It is about beginning.
A reader from Lucknow wrote that she had finally started managing her own investments. A woman from Muzaffarpur began a SIP of just two thousand rupees despite people around her telling her it was too little to matter. A retired bank officer realised she owned four insurance policies but had never really understood any of them. These are not extraordinary stories. They are ordinary people choosing not to wait any longer.
Long before this column began, I had started writing a book. It took me almost two years to research, write, rewrite, and question every chapter. During that process, I kept asking myself one simple question: if I could hand every woman in India just one book about money, what would I want it to say? The answer was never another finance manual. There are already enough books that explain products, markets, and investment strategies. I wanted to write something different. I wanted to write the language of money. The language every woman deserves to speak, whether she is a homemaker, a young professional, an entrepreneur, or someone approaching retirement. Because once you understand the language, you no longer depend on someone else to translate your financial life.
Main Hoon Apni DhanLaxmi in Hindi and I Am My Own Laxmi in English are now available. While the book began long before this column, your questions, your stories, and your experiences made it richer. It goes beyond what a weekly newspaper column can cover, bringing together the ideas we have explored over the months into one complete journey. My hope is that it becomes a companion you return to whenever life presents a new financial decision.

If there is one idea from the book that I want to leave you with today, it is this. Investing is deeply personal. Not because financial products are complicated, but because your goals are unique. No advisor, no neighbour, and no friend who made money in a particular investment knows your life the way you do. They do not know when your daughter will need her education fund, when you hope to retire, how much uncertainty you can comfortably live with, or what financial independence means to you. The biggest mistake investors make is starting with products. The best investors always start with purpose. Once you are clear about what your money needs to achieve, choosing the right investment becomes much easier.
Before I end, I have one small request. If you have been reading this column regularly, write to me at iamolaxmi@gmail.com and tell me which column stayed with you and why. Tell me about one financial decision you made because of something you read here. It does not have to be a long email. One honest paragraph is enough. The first five readers whose letters reach me will receive a signed copy of the book in the language of their choice.
Every week, I have ended this column with one small action. I do not want this final week to be any different. Go back to one column that you read but never acted upon. Whatever it is, do it today. In personal finance, the distance between knowing and doing is where the biggest opportunities are lost.
When this column began, I hoped it would help women understand money a little better. Today, I hope it has done something even more important. I hope it has given you the confidence to ask questions, to make your own decisions, and to believe that your financial future is something you can shape yourself. Markets will change. Products will change. Tax laws will change. But once you learn the language of money, no one can take that understanding away from you.
Because being your own Laxmi has never been about knowing every financial answer. It has always been about having the confidence to make your own financial decisions.
