The Met Gala, officially known as the Costume Institute Benefit, is far more than a glittering social event—it is the primary annual fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Held every year on the first Monday of May, the Gala is responsible for providing the bulk of the Institute’s operating budget, making it vital for acquisitions, exhibitions, and preservation of its vast, 33,000-object collection spanning over 700 years of fashion history. Attended by an exclusive, invite-only guest list of global celebrities, designers, and cultural icons, the evening celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute’s corresponding spring exhibition, with guests encouraged (though not strictly required) to dress according to the year's thematic instruction.
The 2026 theme, “Costume Art,” is one of the most intellectually ambitious in the gala's history. According to Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, the exhibition’s mission is to demonstrate the “centrality of the dressed body” throughout the entire museum's 5,000-year collection. Rather than simply displaying beautiful dresses, the show will place approximately 200 historical and contemporary garments directly alongside masterpieces from other curatorial departments—paintings, sculptures, and objects from prehistory to the present—to show that the human body, clothed or nude, is the enduring focus of all art. The exhibition is organised thematically around various body types, including those often overlooked in traditional fashion displays, such as the "Pregnant Body" and the "Aging Body," ensuring a diverse and inclusive philosophical approach.

The Met Gala is a high-stakes, meticulously orchestrated affair largely overseen by Vogue's Global Editorial Director, Anna Wintour, who has served as a primary chair since 1995. While Wintour is expected to return as the principal host, she will be joined by a roster of celebrity co-chairs, who are typically announced closer to the event date. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his partner Lauren Sánchez have been confirmed as lead sponsors for the exhibition, and are therefore expected to play a prominent role in the evening’s proceedings. The selection of the celebrity co-chairs in the coming months will offer the final clue to the tone and specific cultural direction of this ground-breaking event.
