The 2026 theme, “Costume Art,” is one of the most intellectually ambitious in the gala's history. According to Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, the exhibition’s mission is to demonstrate the “centrality of the dressed body” throughout the entire museum's 5,000-year collection. Rather than simply displaying beautiful dresses, the show will place approximately 200 historical and contemporary garments directly alongside masterpieces from other curatorial departments—paintings, sculptures, and objects from prehistory to the present—to show that the human body, clothed or nude, is the enduring focus of all art. The exhibition is organised thematically around various body types, including those often overlooked in traditional fashion displays, such as the "Pregnant Body" and the "Aging Body," ensuring a diverse and inclusive philosophical approach.

Met Gala 2026: Chair And Host 

The Met Gala is a high-stakes, meticulously orchestrated affair largely overseen by Vogue's Global Editorial Director, Anna Wintour, who has served as a primary chair since 1995. While Wintour is expected to return as the principal host, she will be joined by a roster of celebrity co-chairs, who are typically announced closer to the event date.
