When women are expecting, the first thing they worry about besides health is what will they wear. Earlier the concept of maternity fashion did not really exist in India and women would just go for loose-fitting salwar kameez, hide the baby bump with their saree pallu or resort to nighties with cute laces. However, the world slowly realised that this is unfair and that maternity wear is one market that could become huge. Slowly the fashion world started churning out clothes meant for expecting moms which made them feel good and confidently cute in what they wore. Here is a look at the changes that came in and what points were needed to and are being worked on for would-be-moms.
"Maternity wear is the naïve concept in India. The evolving needs and demands of independent women lead to the evolution of maternity wear. Today’s literate working women prefer decent dresses rather than earlier scruffy, shoddy or shabby maxi and nighties. They are picky, not only about the comfort but also the yarn of the fabric, texture, pattern, and design of the apparel. The utmost priority of the apparel industry is to make mother’s pregnancy period comfortable by fulfilling demands which are coming up in this evolution," shared Rajat Kapoor, Master Franchise India, Seraphine, with HerZindagi.
There were many issues earlier when it came to maternity fashion and then slowly in the past 10 years, they have been extensively worked upon.
A comfortable mother is able to perform more actively in light exercise as compared to an uncomfortable one. The fit should be breathable which is now a major deciding factor when expecting moms shop for themselves or when their husbands go shopping for their expecting wives.
One has to be conscious of fabric quality to avoid any kind of rashes or allergies. Today the designers, fashion houses and brands make sure that these clothes are super soft and make an expecting mother's life more comfortable. The competition today has become so much.
"Maintaining and creating a fabric which is radiation free by advanced technology in order to reduce the effect of UV radiation to the womb," shared Kapoor.
