Paithani saree is a popular Maharashtrian saree which is known for its rich silk, intricate designs and vibrant colours. It is not just a regular saree but it features art that narrates a story in every piece. It holds a treasured place in the trousseau of a bride, as well as in royal families and modern designers. In the modern era, with a plethora of options available, it's crucial to discern the authenticity of a Paithani saree before making a choice. Identifying the genuine saree amidst numerous alternatives is essential to ensure that you don't fall prey to counterfeit options. In light of the same, we spoke to Shri Balkrishna Namdev Kapse, the visionary founder of Kapse Paithani.
Shri Balkrishna Namdev Kapse said, “While there's no guaranteed method for spotting a real Paithani on the spot, some strategies can increase your chances of finding an authentic piece. One approach is to prioritise established shops with a long history of selling genuine Paithanis. Always remember, a real Paithani is more than just fabric; it’s a legacy to cherish.”
How To Identify Paithani Saree?
Here are some guidelines when choosing a genuine Paithani saree:
Fabric Finesse
Real Paithanis are crafted from high-quality silk, boasting a naturally soft, smooth texture and a subtle sheen. Pure silk produces a characteristic rustling sound, so you can touch and feel the same before purchasing.
Weaving Marvel
Unlike machine-made sarees (how to identify kanjivaram saree), which look identical on both sides, Paithanis feature borders and end pieces (pallus) in equal sizes on both ends, indicating manual-intensive weaving.
Imperfect Perfection
Look for slight irregularities in the motifs. Rows of Paithanis have distinct handwork, and they may have certain slight errors, while in contrast, sarees obtained with the help of machines are perfect, and their entire rows are the same.

Natural Dyes
