Taking its legacy from our Grandmother’s wardrobe, the Banarasi saree made its place in GenZ’s wardrobe as well. Banarasi silk sarees represent ageless beauty and regal charm, combining centuries of history, workmanship, and cultural significance. However, in today's market, where imitations abound, recognizing authentic Banarasi sarees from counterfeit reproductions can prove difficult. We spoke to Mr. Jigar Viradiya, Founder and CEO of Vastranand for the same and he shared tips on how you can identify real Banarasi silk sarees.
According to Mr Jigar Viradiya, “Owning an authentic Banarasi silk saree is more than just a possession; it represents a legacy of tradition, artistry, and cultural history. Being diligent in your purchase, you not only get a timeless masterpiece but also help to preserve a rich cultural legacy for future generations. To identify the original Banarasi saree one must look after the GI tag which is the geographical identity tag to have the original and verified Banarasi saree.”
Here are the tips:
Genuine Label
Original Banarasi Saree features a label or tag that certifies its authenticity. Genuine Banarasi sarees frequently feature unique serial numbers, producer/weaver names, and other details. Some labels even include holograms or security measures to prevent counterfeiting attempts. So, always look for such authentic tags while purchasing.
Handmade Details
Authentic Banarasi sarees are handmade and feature symmetrical patterns and minor faults indicating exceptional craftsmanship. Thus, it is advisable to look for such abnormalities in motif size and weaving inconsistencies especially in the pallu, which often has a different design than the saree's body.
Fabric Verification
Banarasi saree features a luxurious, sumptuous feel of high-quality silk fabric. It has a smooth, supple texture and makes a crisp, rustling sound when moved. Be aware of synthetic imitations that pass as silk.
Price Evaluation
Banarasi sarees are valued for their unique weaving techniques and superb craftsmanship. Thus, it comes with a huge price tag. If a saree is much less expensive than others on the market, it should raise suspicions. While price can be used to judge legitimacy, it should not be the main criterion.
