Is hard water making your hair frizzy and brittle? This problem has been faced by many, especially those living in the metro cities. In cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, water is 'hard', which means it contains calcium, magnesium, chlorine, and heavy minerals. Over time, the hard water can strip your hair's natural protective layer called the 'hair barrier'. This results in dryness, breakage, dullness, friziness, and hair fall. But how do you save your hair from hard water? We have some solutions for you.

How does hard water in metro cities damage your hair barrier?

We spoke to Dr. Chetna Chhabra, Clinical Lead – Teleconsultations, AI & Digital Innovations, Clinikally Digital Health Pvt. Ltd., to get to the depth of this problem. She revealed that the hard water contains high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium that can leave deposits on the hair shaft.

If you hair remains tangled, has lost shine, and is frizzy despite regular conditioning, then it is a clear sign of hair damage due to hard water. "Some people may also notice increased hair breakage and split ends. While hard water itself does not directly cause hair loss, the increased breakage can make hair appear thinner over time," Dr. Chetna Chhabra adds.

What are the dermatologist-approved ways to protect hair from hard water?

One of the most effective ways to reduce damage from hard water is to reduce mineral exposure by installing a water softener or shower filter. Moreover, using a clarifying or chelating shampoo once every 1–2 weeks also helps remove mineral buildup.

Dr Chetna Chhabra further suggests using a " nourishing conditioner or hair mask to restore moisture" after shampooing. "Applying a leave-in conditioner or hair serum can also create a protective barrier against dryness. It's important not to overuse clarifying shampoos, as excessive cleansing may strip the scalp and hair of natural oils, doing more bad than good," she says.

Is hard water the only cause of hair damage?

In many cases, hard water may not be the only reason your hair feels damaged. There may be other conditions that are contributing to the hair loss or damage.

“If symptoms persist despite switching to softer water or using clarifying products, other causes should be considered. Hair fall can result from nutritional deficiencies (such as iron, vitamin D, protein deficiency among others), thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances, stress, certain medications or scalp conditions like dandruff or psoriasis,” Dr Chhabra clarifies.

When you consult a dermatologist, they examine several factors that may cause the hair damage, including the scalp and pattern of hair loss. They may also review your medical history and recommend blood tests when needed to identify the underlying cause.
