Yash Chopra’s Wife Pamela Chopra Dies At 74, A Look At How She Contributed To Yash Raj Films

Pamela Chopra, the wife of filmmaker Yash Chopra, passed away on April 20 in Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital. She was 74.

"With heavy hearts the Chopra family would like to inform you that Pamela Chopra, 74, passed away this morning. Her cremation took place at 11 am today. We are grateful for your prayers and the family would like to request for privacy in this moment of deep sadness and reflection," her family wrote in a statement.

The film fraternity took to social media to pay tribute and condolences to the late singer.

Pamela Chopra was not merely the legendary filmmaker’s wife, but has immensely contributed to his films, the production and mostly a significant influence in his life. Recently, a Netflix documentary The Romantics that spoke about the production company in detail shed light on the same. Yash Chopra And Pamela Chopra Marriage

The couple tied the knot in an arranged marriage in 1970. The mother of filmmaker Romesh Sharma, who produced the movie Hum, was friends with both families. Sharma got in touch with BR Chopra's wife and advised that Pamela Singh would make 'the ideal bride' for BR's younger brother Yash Chopra. Pamela was to declare in an interview forty years later, "She was not wrong since we had a wonderful marriage.”

Pamela Chopra’s Contribution To Yash Chopra’s Films

From Kabhi Kabhie (1976) to Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002) Pamela gave her voice to numerous films by Yash Chopra. Other films include Silsila, Kaala Patthar, Darr, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Chandni, among several others.

In the four-part Netflix docu series, it was revealed that the main motivation behind making Yash Chopra Films studio after leaving his brother’s studio BR Chopra Films was Pamela Chopra after the couple had just returned from their honeymoon.

In an old interview, Yash Chopra had shared that, “I just thought after directing five films at B.R. Films. I thought it's high time I should fly on my own wings." Following which, Pamela said, "He has always been under the umbrella of his brother. First, when we came to Bombay after marriage, we were staying with them."

"One day, he got up and said 'Look we're shifting the house.' I just asked 'What do you feel right inside you? Just do it. Now or never you have to do it," she added.

Further, in the docu series, Pamela recalled Yash Chopra’s sleepless nights before the release of his first film Daag under his new banner of Yash Raj Films. She said, "He was probably the most modest person in the world. Like, if he got an award or honours or something, the first thing he would tell me was, 'Do you think I really deserve this?'

Pamela’s Influence of Female Perspective In Yash Raj Films

Yash Chopra and Pamela Chopra’s younger son Uday Chopra mentioned in the docu series how the filmmaker would always ask his wife Pamela about her perspective in his films. “He would always ask her, what is the woman's perspective? I think you will see this change in his movies post-marriage."

Pamela also wrote one of the iconic films Kabhi Kabhie.
