Somy Ali, the Pakistani-American actor, model, and activist, who worked in Bollywood films in the 90s, has asked for a public apology from her ex-boyfriend, actor Salman Khan. Ali had alleged Khan subjected her to physical and sexual abuse. Ali was in a relationship with Khan approximately from 1991 to 1999.
In the past also, Somy Ali took to social media multiple times alleging Khan of abusing her both physically and sexually during their relationship. On January 6, 2023, she took to Instagram to address the issue.
Somy’s Allegations Against Salman
Ali said that she posted and deleted posts regarding the same multiple times because she had used “profanity” and that her anger got the best of her. “As an executive director of an NGO, it did not sit well with me to have profane posts on my social media. Thus, I deleted them,” she wrote.

Further, she had revealed that the eight years she spent with Khan were the “worst” years of her “entire existence”. In addition to tons of affairs and flings, “he would constantly belittle me by calling me ugly, stupid, and dumb” as per Ali. “He would not acknowledge me as his girlfriend in public for years and when he finally did he would insult me in front of his friends and berate me nonstop. I have no qualms in saying that given his treatment of me I chose to have affairs, which essentially defined as a search for someone who would care for me and love me. Someone who would not insult me and would actually be nice to me. Unfortunately, I was unaware that these men were simply using me and I was building a future with each affair while I was simply being used. When Salman learned of these affairs he had the guts to beat me saying that I am a man and only men can cheat not women. I was aghast at that statement and the sexism that reeked from it. Let's not forget that just because Salman or anyone else is nice to you, they are the same with others. I had it the worst in terms of verbal, sexual and physical abuse,” she explained.
“Salman Khan Is A Woman Beater”
A day later, Ali shared the poster of an upcoming docuseries on Discovery+ titled Fight or Flight that featured her and her non-profit organisation No More Tears. Along with the poster she penned a long note addressing the alleged abuse she faced during her relationship with Khan.
She wrote when she called Khan “a woman beater, claimed that he gave me cigarette burns, physically abused and indulged in sodomy” that was all true. Ali also spoke about dealing with the alleged trauma and going to therapy for the same. “I am still in therapy and my healing comes from rescuing other victims and transforming them into survivors. The whole reason I started my NGO was because of how normal our culture deems domestic violence and sexual abuse to be. It is always swept under the rug and no one wants to talk about it. I would be the world's biggest hypocrite while I am running a charity getting victims out of abusive situations and denying that I too am a survivor. It's an unpleasant bond I share with the victims we rescue nonetheless it's a bond that can never be broken. I take it one day at a time and focus on my work which is why I am so angry for what he has done not just to me, but to several lives that could have been saved,” she said.
On January 7, she shared a video where she shared that she began speaking on the issue so many years later primarily because of trauma, but also because Khan banned her show from being aired in India.

Public Apology
Seeking a public apology from Khan, Ali said, “I want Salman Khan to confess what he put me through, from the verbal, sexual and physical abuse and I want a public apology which an egomaniac and a narcissistic individual will probably never do. And I want him to unban my show and I want India to be able to watch what No More Tears does, what I have given my 15 years of blood and sweat in working and saving over 40,000 men and women.”
“I want Mr Khan to look at himself in the mirror and ask himself this question: How can you say that you have never hit me or abused me? How can you live with yourself, knowing that I’ve done these things and blatantly denied them and then have the audacity to ban my show? Shame on you. I hope that you find the grace in yourself to apologise publicly and to confess what you have done,” she further said in the video.
