Uma Dasgupta, the beloved actress who portrayed the iconic character of Durga in Satyajit Ray's legendary 1955 film Pather Panchali, has passed away at the age of 84. The actress, who had been battling cancer for several years, died on Monday at a private hospital in Kolkata. Her death was confirmed by actor and Member of Parliament, Chiranjit Chakraborty, who shared the news with Bangla Aajtak. Chakraborty revealed that he had learned of her passing from her daughter.
Though Pather Panchali was the only film Uma Dasgupta ever acted in, her portrayal of Durga has become a cornerstone of world cinema. The film, based on Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay's novel, tells the story of a poor Bengali family, with Uma’s character, Durga, being the elder sister of the protagonist Apu.
One of the most memorable scenes from Pather Panchali features Durga and Apu running through the tall, white kaash phool as a train passes by, leaving behind a trail of black smoke. This moment, captured beautifully by Ray, is etched in the minds of cinephiles worldwide. Though she did not continue her acting career after this film, Uma’s performance in this single role cemented her place in cinematic history.
Despite achieving international fame with Pather Panchali, Uma Dasgupta chose to step away from the film industry. She dedicated the rest of her life to teaching, following a path that focused on education rather than the limelight. Over the years, she remained a private person, and her choice to leave acting after her debut was respected by many.
Rumours surrounding her life in recent years had suggested that she lived in an old age home, but Chiranjit Chakraborty, who lived in the same housing complex, dismissed these as false. He confirmed that Uma Dasgupta had lived in the complex with her family until her passing.
