Remembering A Melodic Legend: Playback Singer Uma Ramanan Passes Away

Indian playback singer Uma Ramanan passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the age of 72 years. She predominantly sang in Tamil and gave her voice to many memorable songs in Tamil cinema. The reason behind her death is still unknown. Scroll down to read more about the playback singer.

Uma Ramanan who was a popular playback singer passed away at 72 years. The singer died in Chennai. However, the reason for her death is still unknown. She is survived by her singer husband AV Ramanan and her son Vignesh Ramanan.

Uma Ramanan Singing Career

Uma was one of Ilaiyaraaja’s longtime collaborators. Their songs(movie songs for instagram reels), Poongathave Thalthiravai, for the film Nizhalgal, gave her fame and made her a household name. Her collaboration with Ilaiyaraaja includes Oru Jeevan Alaithathu from Geetanjali, Aagava Vennilave from Arangetra Velai, Poopalam Isaikum from Thambikku Entha Ooru, Poongathave Thal Thiravai from Nilalgal, and Nee Padhi Naan Padhi Kanne from Keladi Kanmani, among many others. She was also a trained classical singer and appeared in more than 6000 concerts in 35 years of her career. She started collaborating with musician AV Ramanan and eventually got married. She worked on more than 100 songs with Ilaiyaraaja. Apart from him she also collaborated with composers  Vidyasagar, Mani Sharma and Deva.

She made her debut as a singer with the song ‘Sri Krishna Leela’ which was released in 1977. She sang this song with her husband AV Ramanan. Uma Ramanan’s last song was  'Kannum Kannumthan Kalandaachu' for Vijay's 'Thirupaachi'. This song was composed by Mani Sharma and she sang the song with Harish Raghavendra and Premji Amaren.

The news of her demise has left her fans heartbroken. Her fans took to Twitter and shared tributes.
