Over the years, several Bollywood films have paid an ode to iconic cities of India including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata among others while romanticising them in their own beautiful ways and used them as the backdrop of the films.

Here’s a curation of five such Bollywood films that quintessentially captured the essence of Dilwalon Ki Dilli.

The Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor starrer film Delhi 6 is one of the best Bollywood films to have captured the essence of Delhi through the musty lanes of puraani Dilli (old Delhi). Directed by Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra, the film gives major Delhi feels as it takes you through the heritage Jama Masjid, nooks and corners of Chandni Chowk, and Cannaught Place, among other old Delhi lanes. It also gives a sense of the Delhi culture through drying achaar on the rooftop, grinding turmeric and masalas, and drying red chillies through the songs Genda Phool and Massakali.

Though the 2012 Hindi film Vicky Donor features Ayushmann Khurana as a Delhi-based boy, the Soojit Sircar directorial had glimpses of Durga Pujo in Delhi. The film takes you on a tour of Delhi’s streets, food streets, CP, and other places through the love story between Khurrana and Yami Gautam.

Rang De Basanti

Rang De Basanti is one of the classic Hindi films of its time from filmmaker Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra. Shot primarily in Delhi, the National award winning film narrates the story of Delhi University students fighting the corruption of their government inspired by the stories of five freedom fighters of the Indian revolutionary movement. Through their lives, the film shows glimpses of Delhi from the perspective of Delhi University students as well as the freedom fighters.

In this 2011 musical romantic drama film Rockstar directed by Imtiaz Ali, Kapoor plays a troubled musician. The film follows the journey of an aspiring musician from a humble background to international stardom. The film is shot in iconic Delhi places including St. Stephen’s College, Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah, and Hauz Khas shown in the song Tum Ho.
