When They First Met

The duo met on the sets of the film Tum Haseen Main Jawaan. Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur for over 10 years at that point, so Malini was very reluctant to pursue anything with him. He also had two children with his wife – Bobby and Sunny. But this did not prevent Dharmendra from falling in love with Malini and pursuing her. Reportedly, Malini had many suitors she had turned down, including Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra.

Moreover, it was rumoured that during the shooting of Sholay, Dharmendra bribed some of the lighting crew to constantly disturb the lights so that he could have constant re-takes with Malini and get a chance to get closer to her. Dharmendra’s first wife, Prakash Kaur refused to get a divorce, so the couple decided to convert to Islam to get married. They tied the knot in a Nikahnama ceremony, but kept the nikah a secret for a year, after which they married in the traditional Iyengar style. Both their families disapproved of the match and expressed disappointment in them for converting to Islam. But, eventually everybody came to accept them for the strong bond of love they shared.

Dharmendra and Hema Malini have been married for more than 40 years now, and have two daughters Esha and Ahana. They may have had an unconventional beginning, but their love blossoms to date.
