Bollywood actress Neetu Chandra, known for her roles in films like ‘Garam Masala’ and ‘Traffic Signal’, has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Patna High Court against rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh’s controversial song ‘Maniac’. Chandra has accused the song of objectifying women and promoting vulgarity through its lyrics. Through the PIL, she is demanding a ban on such songs, which she believes harm the dignity and respect of women.

In her petition, Neetu Chandra has called out Yo Yo Honey Singh for using ‘Maniac’ to sexualise women. The PIL also names lyricist Leo Grewal and Bhojpuri singers Ragini Vishwakarma and Arjun Ajanabi, who contributed to the track. The case is expected to be heard later this month.

Chandra argues that the song’s lyrics reduce women to mere objects and normalise vulgarity, especially through its use of Bhojpuri language. She believes that such content undermines women’s empowerment and reinforces harmful stereotypes.

Neetu Chandra Speaks Out Against Vulgar Music

In an interview, Neetu Chandra expressed her deep concern about the impact of vulgar songs on women, particularly in Bihar. She shared how young girls and women feel uncomfortable and unsafe due to the prevalence of such music.

“Vulgar Bhojpuri and Hindi songs are making life difficult for girls and women in Bihar. They are forced to walk with their heads down, afraid of judgement and harassment,” she said. “These songs are so offensive that women don’t even feel comfortable watching TV at home. It’s alarming that some singers gain fame by promoting such content, which ultimately harms society and the country.”

Chandra emphasised that when women feel unsafe walking on the streets, their ability to focus on personal or societal progress is severely affected. She urged the government to take action, drawing a parallel to the ban on alcohol and protecting women from intoxicated husbands. Neetu called for a ban on vulgar songs in Bihar, especially to safeguard the dignity of young girls and women.

Released on February 22, 2025, ‘Maniac’ features Yo Yo Honey Singh and is produced by T-Series. The music video, starring actress Esha Gupta, quickly gained popularity, racking up over seven crore views on YouTube. However, its success has been overshadowed by criticism over its lyrics and portrayal of women.

Neetu Chandra’s bold step against Yo Yo Honey Singh’s ‘Maniac’ highlights the urgent need for responsible media content that respects women’s dignity. Her fight against vulgarity in music could lead to stronger laws and regulations, ensuring that women are no longer objectified in the entertainment industry.
