India’s Got Latent Controversy Explained
The controversy centres around a YouTube show titled India’s Got Latent, hosted by comedian Samay Raina and featuring popular content creators including Apoorva Mukhija (The Rebel Kid), Ranveer Allahbadia (BeerBiceps), Ashish Chanchlani, and Jaspreet Singh. During one of the episodes, a particular clip went viral online that featured Ranveer asking an inappropriate and uncomfortable question to a contestant. Though the show was meant to be humorous and light-hearted, the joke was seen by many as crossing a line.

The clip received massive backlash across social media, with users slamming the creators for promoting obscene, insensitive, and offensive content. The criticism escalated further when it was pointed out that the content was not age-restricted, meaning even children could have come across it through YouTube’s recommendation algorithm.
In response to the outrage, the Hindu IT Cell took formal action. A person named Akshit Singh lodged a complaint with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, accusing Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia of promoting obscenity through their show.

While it is important to reflect on what kind of jokes are acceptable, we must also question the double standards. Why is online abuse, bullying, and life-threatening harassment often ignored, while creators face legal action for jokes? As a nation, we need to draw a clear line between freedom of speech and accountability. We must recognise that differing opinions are natural, and jokes made without harmful intent should not be treated as crimes.
