God Vitthal is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who is also known as ‘Vitthal of Pandharpur.’ There is an interesting story associated with the Vitthal God and his sacred brick. Let us know about Vitthal God and his story of the sacred brick from astrology expert Radhakant Vats in this article.
Vitthal God And His Sacred Brick
- You will always notice that the idol of the Vitthal God is not seated on anything but is seen standing on a brick.
- Pundalik, who was a devotee, was born in Pandharpur, Maharashtra during the sixth century. He had a calm, simple and easy-going nature. He is still known for his ardent devotion to Lord Krishna.
- While Lord Krishna was residing in the Dwarka kingdom, he used to listen to Pundalik because of his captivating devotion. One day, Lord Krishna got ready with all his ornaments and left to meet his devotee Pundalik.
- Maa Rukmani stopped Shri Krishna and asked him where he was going. Krishna told her that he was going to meet his devotee.
- Goddess Rukmani pondered over Pundalik’s devotion that made Lord Krishna want to get dressed up and leave to meet him.
- She asked Lord Krishna if she could accompany him and he agreed immediately. Both of them reached Pundalik's house and started calling him. Pundalik was massaging his father's feet at this time.
- Since he was busy serving his father, Pundalik requested Shri Krishna to stand on a brick and asked him to wait. Lord Krishna didn’t resist because of Pundalik’s love for him and stood on a brick as he waited for his devotee.
- “It was getting late while standing so Shri Krishna put his hands on his waist and on the other side, Maa Rukmani also stood on the brick along with Shri Krishna and started waiting. When Pundalik came out to meet the Lord after retiring from his service, by then Shri Krishna and Maa Rukmani had become established in the idol form. Pundalik installed the idols of Shri Krishna and Maa Rukmani in his house and started worshipping them. A brick is called Vit in Marathi, hence, Shri Krishna standing on the brick was named Vitthal,” astrologer Vats recited.
