The chhanni, which has several tiny holes, creates multiple reflections when women look at the moon through it. According to tradition, these reflections represent blessings and longevity. When women then view their husband through the same chhanni, it is believed that each reflection adds years to his life.

This act also signifies the removal of darkness and negativity from their marital life, allowing only light, clarity, and blessings to pass through, just like the filtered light of the moon through the sieve.

The ritual of Karwa Chauth finds mention in ancient Hindu texts. As per the Puranas, this festival is also known as Karaka Chaturthi. Mythology states that when Prajapati Daksha cursed the Moon (Chandra Dev) to lose his shine, the Moon sought Lord Shiva’s help. Shiva then blessed him, saying that whoever worships the moon on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Kartik month will have their sins washed away.

This story signifies the purification and renewal associated with the moon, which is why it plays a central role in Karwa Chauth.

• Begin your day with sargi, a pre-dawn meal prepared by the mother-in-law.
• Avoid breaking the fast before moonrise. Waiting for the moon is essential to complete the ritual.
• Offer arghya (water) to the moon after sighting it, and then look at your husband through the chhanni.
• Pray for his long life before taking your first sip of water.
• Unmarried women can also observe this fast with the hope of finding a suitable life partner.
