Janmashtami Shubh Muhurat 2024: Puja Vidhi, Vrat Vidhi, Rituals, And More

One of the highly awaited festivals for millions of Krishna devotees, Janmashtami is here. The festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. This year, the devotees will be celebrating the 5251st birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, according to ancient scriptures. Know the Shubh Muhurat, Puja Vidhi, Vrat rituals, and more from Pawan Gera, astrologer, numerologist and Vastu consultant.

Janmashtami 2024 Shubh Muhurat

The auspicious festival of Janmashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada. This year, we’ll be celebrating it on Monday, August 26. The most auspicious time for Krishna Janmashtami rituals, the Nishita Kaal Puja Muhurat will be between 12:01 am and 12:45 am on August 27. 

“Observing the puja during this period is said to bring immense blessings and prosperity to the devotees. On this auspicious day, Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga will also occur from Monday, August 26, 2024, at 3:55 pm and remain until Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at 5:57 am,” said astrologer Gera.

How To Perform Janmashtami Puja Vidhi 2024?

Astrologer Pawan said, “Performing the Janmashtami Puja with devotion and adherence to the rituals is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and protection from negative energies. Here is a step-by-step guide to performing the Janmashtami Puja,”

Prepare Puja Area On Janmashtmi 2024

• Clean the area where you intend to perform the puja.
• Decorate it with flowers, rangoli, and lights.
• Place a small swing (Krishna Jhula) for Lord Krishna’s idol.

Bathing the Idol (Lord Krishna Abhishek)

Bathe the idol of Lord Krishna with Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, yoghurt, honey, ghee, and sugar) and then with clean Ganga Jal. In case you don’t have Ganga Jal, you can use clean water as well.

After the abhishek, wipe the idol with a clean cloth.

Dressing the Lord Krishna 

• Adorn the idol with new clothes, jewellery, and flowers.
• Place the idol in the Jhula.

Offering Prayers

• Light a Diya (lamp) and incense sticks in front of the idol.
• Chant the 108 names of Lord Krishna or recite the Vishnu Sahasranama.
• Sing Bhajans and Kirtans dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Offering Bhog (Prasad On Janmashtmi 2024 )

• Prepare and offer traditional sweets like butter, curd, and kheer to Lord Krishna.
• You can also offer fruits, dry fruits, and other delicacies.

Aarti and Mantra Chanting

• Perform the Aarti with a lit Diya.
• Chant Mantras and Shlokas like “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” during the puja.

Midnight Rituals

• At the exact time of Lord Krishna's birth (Nishita Kaal), place the idol in the Jhula and gently swing it while singing Bhajans.
• Distribute the bhog as prasad to all family members after the rituals.

Break the Fast Timings On Janmashtmi 2024

“Devotees observing a fast can break it after the Parana time on the following day. However, some devotees observe the fast until the Nishita Kaal Puja. Parana time at night would be 12:59 am on August 27,” said astrologer Pawan Gera.
