Why should cow dung be burnt at home on the day of Govardhan Puja?

According to the legend, when Shri Krishna started the worship of Govardhan Mountain, Lord Indra got angry and destroyed the entire Gokul. Seeing this, Shri Krishna held Govardhan Mountain on his little finger for 7 days to save the people of Braj.

When despite all the efforts of Indradev, he could not do any harm to the people of Braj, then he realized his mistake and sought forgiveness from Shri Krishna and sought refuge in him. Then Shri Krishna forgave him and asked the villagers to return to their homes.

But the problem was that every house in the village was badly damaged and the streets of Braj were lifeless and desolate. Then Shri Krishna asked all the people of Braj to worship cow and smoke cow dung in the entire Braj, after which a miracle happened.

All the houses of Braj went back to being as they were before and with the blessings of sacred cows, the negativity in the environment was removed. Happiness, prosperity, grandeur, positivity and divine energy returned to all the houses. This is the reason why cow dung should be smoked in the house on the evening of Govardhan Puja.
