Ingredients

    To make ven pongal you need one cup raw rice, half cup moong dal, four cups water, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and salt as per your taste.

Cook the ingredients

    Wash the rice and moong dal together. In a pressure cooker, combine rice, dal, turmeric, salt, and water. Cook for 3 to 4 whistles. Once done, mash it lightly to get a creamy texture.

Prepare the tempering

    Heat ghee in a pan and add cashews until golden brown. In the same ghee, heat cumin seeds, crushed black pepper, chopped ginger and curry leaves

Combine everything

    Add the tempering over-cooked rice and dal mixture. Mix well and add hot water if the consistency is too thick.

Serve hot

    Add some ghee to ven pongal for a temple-style aroma. Also, garnish with roasted cashews. You can pair it with coconut chutney or sambar.
