Class, the Indian adaptation of the Spanish series Elite, follows three kids from underprivileged backgrounds who join a posh international Delhi school and a murder takes place. The series premiered on Netflix on February 3.
Directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, Class is not just a cliche high school drama series where the underprivileged are bullied by rich kids. It’s a nuanced storytelling of class divide, socioeconomic differences, and caste and religious divide, and the boon of social media where each character is flawed to the extent that you can’t empathise with any really.
“I’ve extended the roles of the adults and the parents, because I was interested in this idea that if the kids are as wild as they are, and they’re all intense in a way whether they’re rich or poor, then the parents must be even more crazy,” said Ahluwalia in an interview with Deadline.

So, we have brought you all the right reasons why you should not miss watching this latest Netflix.
Debut Performances
Almost the entire caste is new and young, and they deliver an absolutely unexpected class performance throughout the series. Piyush Khati (Dheeraj), Gurfateh Pirzada (Neeraj) to Madhyama Sehgal (Saba Manzoor), Zeyn Shaw (Veer Ahuja), among several others were at par with popular actors such as Ratnabali Bhattacharjee, Suparna Moitra, and Kabir Sadanand, among others.
No Topic Is Just Touched Upon, Delved To The Right Depth
From class divide and socioeconomic differences to caste, religion and sexuality, the series has focused on a wide spectrum of societal issues including institutional corruption, and the subtle parallel drawn between Palestine and Kashmir. In most cases, when there are so many issues to deal with in a story, the makers tend to merely touch upon the topics without delving deeper into the real problems. In Class, Ahluwalia has done a commendable job in piecing together all the aspects of it.
Balanced POV
Just like the director, you as an audience also can’t empathise with either side or any character with all the flaws and shaky values. The series doesn’t let you judge the actual protagonist and antagonist of the plot.
Lanes of Delhi & Cinematography
The series takes you through dingy, rusty lanes of Delhi as well as the posh rich societies. The use of certain colour palettes such as pastels and glossy when showing the rich and the stark opposite for the others deserves a mention. The camera angles, the frames, the time-to-time bird’s eye view of the highways or the city, and the entire flow of cinematography makes the series worth a watch.

Storytelling
With a murder investigation at the centre, and the smooth weaving of the entire story with so many aspects to deal with, Ahluwalia has done justice to this top Class series.
