Netflix’s ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ is a complex show, and the conclusion of season 2 is no exception. Set against the backdrop of the 1940s Japanese occupation of Korea, the South Korean drama revolves around sinister experiments and their terrifying consequences. The season 2 finale raises the stakes even higher, leaving many viewers puzzled. If you're struggling to make sense of it all after finishing the show, don’t worry, below, we break down and clarify the ending for you.

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ Season 2 Ending Explained

The second season of ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ brings a wave of fresh conflicts, including new Najin-infected superhumans, betrayals, and the ultimate downfall of Maeda (portrayed by Claudia Kim).

Episode 7, titled "Marginal Man," begins with a flashback where we witness an intense conversation between Seung-jo (played by Bae Hyeon-seong) and Ho-jae, also known as Tae-sang. For context, Ho-jae is actually Tae-sang from 1945, having survived all these years after injecting himself with the Najin parasite. In the flashback, Seung-jo asks Ho-jae why he continues to battle monsters even though the fight seems unwinnable. Ho-jae reveals that it's not about victory but about revenge against Maeda and others like her: "As long as we fight, they will never forget what they did to us."

The scene then moves back to the present, where Seung-jo is heading to meet Maeda. Reflecting on his earlier talk with Ho-jae, he regrets their meeting, realising he would have accepted becoming a monster if they hadn’t crossed paths. Shortly after, Seung-jo is involved in a car accident but manages to survive. Emerging from the wreckage, he encounters Chae-ok, who informs him that Maeda—whom he calls “mother”—has only been using him as part of her experiments, treating him as nothing more than a pawn. Though Seung-jo feigns indifference regarding his biological mother, Myeong-ja, the conversation deeply unsettles him. Consumed by darkness, Seung-jo captures Chae-ok and takes her to Jeonseong Biotech, where she is suspended above a tank designed for transferring the Najin parasite. If she’s drowned, her memories will either be extracted, or she will perish.

Meanwhile, Maeda presents Ho-jae with a cruel ultimatum: he can either save his business partner Yong-gil (played by Heo Joon-seok), detective Myung-jun (played by Lee Sung-wook), and Antenna’s grandson, or rescue his lover, Chae-ok. Ho-jae opts to save his friends first. In the meantime, Chae-ok fiercely defends herself, managing to fend off her attackers and delay her impending death.

After rescuing his friends from the nitrogen chamber, Ho-jae rushes back to Chae-ok. Simultaneously, Seung-jo confronts Maeda about the revelations from Chae-ok. When Maeda admits she never loved him and only saw him as a subject for her experiments, Seung-jo turns on her, stabbing her with his tentacles and throwing her into the nitrogen chamber, leaving her to meet her end.

Chae-ok puts up a valiant fight against the superhuman Kuroko soldiers, but she eventually succumbs, drowning in the freezing water tank. As her heart stops, the Najin parasite exits her body as expected, and the Kuroko captain (played by Lee Mu-saeng) prepares to leave with it. However, Ho-jae arrives just in time, taking down all the Kuroko soldiers. Desperate to save Chae-ok, he fights to free her from the tank, all while recalling their love story from 1945 Gyeongseong. With relentless effort, Ho-jae punches the tank repeatedly until he breaks it open and rescues her.

Though Chae-ok survives, the Najin parasite that had been inside her lies on the ground in a pool of water.

The final episode of the 2024 K-drama then skips ahead in time. Chae-ok is now living a normal life, but she has lost all memory of the past, including Ho-jae. Despite this, she still wears an old bracelet from 1945.

As Chae-ok walks down a street in Seoul, her voiceover reflects, “Sometimes I have this dream. In the dream, I’m always chasing someone, but I never know who he is, nor do I remember his face. Yet, when I wake up, my heart aches, as if longing for him.” The voiceover echoes the recurring theme of the show: “Spring will pass, and summer will return,” as she glances back and spots Ho-jae in the crowd. They exchange a tearful, knowing smile, and Ho-jae’s voiceover completes her thought, "And we will be together again."
