From Commonwealth 2022 to pay parity in women’s cricket to IPL for women, this year was a year where sports witnessed several landmark moments when it came to women.
Women made history at the Commonwealth Games 2022 by securing the first-ever medal in Lawn Bowls. Marking the first time in the history of multi-sport events, there were more medals for women than men in the Commonwealth Games 2022.
This year also saw women’s cricket for the first time at the Commonwealth. With so many women making a mark at both national and international stages, here are five Indian sportswomen who made history this year.
Mirabai Chanu

Mirabai Chanu won the first gold medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting final at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Prior to this, the 28-year-old hailing from Manipur had first created history by winning a silver in the Women’s 49 kg Weightlifting event at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Recently, Chanu also won another silver in the Weightlifting World Championships after lifting a total weight of 200kg.

Linthoi Channthoi Chanambam

In a historic win, Linthoi Chanambam, a 16-year-old girl from Manipur, became the first-ever Indian to win a title in judo on August 26, 2022. She won a gold medal by defeating Reis Bianca from Brazil in the 57kg category event at the World Cadet Championships held in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Nikhat Zareen

Sixteen years after Mary Kom, it was the 26-year-old sportswoman Nikhat Zareen who became a world champion. She has also become the fifth Indian woman to win a gold medal at the boxing world championships and a gold in the women’s light flyweight category at the Commonwealth games 2022.
Rupal Chaudhary
Rupal Chaudhary, the 17-year-old sprinter, has become the first-ever Indian to bag two medals at the same World U-20 event by scoring a bronze in the 400 m race as well as silver in the 4 x 400 m race. Hailing from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, the sprinter shined bright at the World Athletic U20 Championships 2022.

Jemimah Rodrigues

Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues has been signed by the Australian Twenty20 Cricket Franchise Team, Melbourne Stars, for the eighth season of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). She made history by becoming the first-ever Indian to play for the Stars. Born in Mumbai, Rodrigues turned 22-year-old this year and is already reaching career heights after representing 50 T20 Internationals and 21 ODIs. Rodrigues, who made her Women’s Twenty20 International cricket debut against South Africa in 2018, is the second woman after Smriti Mandhana to score a double century in a 50-over cricket match. She was a member of the Indian squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia, and was the second-highest run-scorer in the women's Hundred tournament with 249 runs.
