After being in ill health for the past two years, Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane died at the age of 72. He died at a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland. The news was confirmed by the actor's agent Belinda Wright to a media publication Deadline today, but the cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.

Coltrane had starred in a number of iconic films and shows throughout the years, including Cracker, GoldenEye, the Harry Potter series, and James Bond movies.

He was best known for his role as Rubeus Hagrid, a beloved half-giant-half-wizard Hogwarts Housekeeper and Harry Potter's friend in Harry Potter movies.

During his acting career, he was awarded three British Academy Television Awards, a Royal Television Society Award and a special honour at the 2016 Monte-Carlo Television Festival.

Coltrane was born on March 30, 1950, in Glasgow, Scotland. He was named Anthony Robert McMillan in Rutherglen. He graduated from Glasgow Art School and continued his studies in art at Moray House College of Education in Edinburgh, Scotland.

His attempts to become an artist, however, were unsuccessful, and he turned to stand-up comedy in Edinburgh clubs. He then began acting in London, and at this time, he also had his last name changed in honour of the jazz legend John Coltrane. The actor first found fame inthe 1990s for his acting as a detective in Cracker.

On social media, celebrities paid tribute to and offered their condolences to the late actor.

Actor Stephen Fry wrote, "I first met Robbie Coltrane almost exactly 40 years ago. I was awe/terror/love struck all at the same time. Such depth, power & talent: funny enough to cause helpless hiccups & honking as we made our first TV show, “Alfresco”. Farewell, old fellow. You’ll be so dreadfully missed."

Actor James Phelps tweetes, " will miss the random chats about all subjects under the sun.And I'll never forget in September 2000, Robbie Coltrane came over to a very nervous 14yr old me on my 1st ever day on a movie set and said "Enjoy it, you'll be great". Thank you for that x."

Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe issued a statement after Coltrane's death. The statement read, “Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set. “I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on ‘Prisoner of Azkaban,’ when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

The actor is survived by two children, a daughter named Alice and a son named Spencer.
