Rabindranath Thakur, popularly known as Rabindranath Tagore, is a prominent poet, novelist, and playwright. Also a freedom fighter, he influenced the masses during the freedom struggle with poetry and plays. He primarily wrote in the Bengali language, however, there is a significant of his work in English as well.

Chokher Bali
Written in 1903, Rabindranath Tagore’s famous novel ‘Chokher Bali’ journeys around the vigorous Binodini and her relationship with Mahendra, his wife Ashalata, and Behari. The novel which is way ahead of its time portrays Binodini as a bold, young widow who explores sexuality, friendship, and more, representing a modern-day feminist with a hint of disloyal attempts towards leading a content life.
Gitanjali
Rabindranath Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his masterpiece ‘Gitanjali’. Published in late 1912, ‘Gitanjali’ is an anthology of poems touching themes including love, spirituality, religious emotions, and more. This book marked his first anthology exploring the innermost depths of the human soul with poems including ‘My Desires Are Many’, ‘That I Want Thee’, and ‘Early in the Day It Was Whispered’.
Nastanirh - The Broken Nest
‘Nastanirh’ is a Bengali language novel published in 1901 that was later translated into English with the title ‘The Broken Nest’. This is the story of Charulata, a lonely wife keen on music whose husband leaves for work and cannot dedicate her time. He calls his brother, also into arts, to give Charu company. This novel has also been adapted as a movie called ‘Charulata’.

Gora
Published in 1910, ‘Gora’ is one of Rabindranath Tagore’s best works that revolves around two parallel love stories between Gora and Sucharita, and Binoy and Lolita. Set in the 1880s, the story presents the blossoming romances and the effect of the socio-political conflicts in them.
Shesher Kabita
‘Shesher Kabita’ is a well-known novel published in 1928. This is the story of a young man named Amit Raye who falls for Labanya during a trip to a hill station only to discover that she is engaged. As the story unfolds, we witness intense themes presented in modernised ways that are relevant even today.
