Maharashtra Makes Mother's Name Mandatory On Government Docs

The Maharashtra Cabinet has implemented a significant change, requiring the inclusion of the mother's first name in all government documents. This move aims to enhance identity documentation and acknowledges the importance of maternal lineage.

Here's a detailed overview of this decision and other key initiatives approved by the Cabinet:

New Document Protocol

The recent Cabinet decision, overseen by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, mandates a specific format for listing names on government documents. Individuals born on or after May 1, 2014, are now required to register their name with their mother's first name preceding their father's first name and surname. This revised protocol applies to various official documents, including birth certificates, educational records, property deeds, Aadhar cards, and PAN cards. However, exceptions are made for orphans. 

“Mothers have the lion's share in bringing up children, and the state government has taken a historic decision to give them due credit,” Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said in a tweet on Tuesday.

Married women can continue using the existing convention of listing their name followed by their husband's first name and surname. This decision recognises established naming practices while ensuring uniformity in documentation procedures.

To ensure transparency and accessibility, the Maharashtra government has uploaded the Cabinet Decision dated March 11, 2024, on its official website. This action enables citizens to access and familiarise themselves with the new documentation requirements.

Other Cabinet Approvals

In addition to the naming protocol update, the Maharashtra Cabinet has approved several other noteworthy proposals:

• A proposal to develop a 300-acre park in Mumbai has been cleared, aimed at enhancing green spaces within the city. Additionally, plans for the construction of a guesthouse in Ayodhya cater to the accommodation needs of state pilgrims, facilitating their religious journeys.
• The Cabinet has greenlit a proposal to reduce stamp duty for residents of the BDD chawls and slums, providing financial relief to these communities. Furthermore, approval has been granted for a plan to construct permanent housing for families of workers from 58 defunct textile mills in the city. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the state housing department will allocate ₹3000 crore for this initiative, addressing housing needs and improving living conditions.
• The Cabinet's approval of the Transgender Policy 2024 marks a significant step towards inclusivity and recognition of the transgender community (Meet Swetha Sudhakar, A Transgender Social Activist Empowering Education And Employment For Her Community). This policy grants official recognition to transgender individuals, enabling them to access government schemes and services as per eligibility criteria.
