Career is an important part of our lives but so is starting and maintaining our families. Since women are majorly associated with childcare and hospitality, they are the first ones who are bound to take a break from their thriving careers to extend support to their families. Furthermore, women get to experience the beauty of motherhood but that brings a career slowdown for some.
We spoke to Rajat Vashishta, Founder of the career-building website Resumod, and a mentor and career coach to seek insights on how women can utilise these breaks and use them as a stepping stone in their growth. Here are some tips that you can follow.
Networking
Despite being on a break, you can utilise this time to strengthen your existing networks. Congratulate your LinkedIn (LinkedIn New Job Post Announcements) contacts on their promotion and comment on their posts. Further, join online professional groups that can help you with guidance and organise seminars and conferences.
Learning
“There is no age to learn,” a wise person once said. Take complete benefit of your breaks to awaken your curiosity and educate yourself on fresh concepts. With the ever-evolving technology, the world is growing too, which calls for an expansion of your knowledge as well. Utilise this time to gain insights and develop new skills to help you improve in your field. Pursue multiple small courses, do a diploma, or do distance education. These will be a great addition to your resume.

Go With The Trend
It is essential to stay aware of the trends and developments in your industry. Our expert suggests, “Subscribe to relevant publications and startup news, follow industry leaders on social media, and utilise online alerts to stay informed.”
Volunteering
One of the best ways to thrive even while being on a break is by volunteering at organisations related to your field. This is a great way of contributing, sharing knowledge, and extending support to those who are willing to make the industry grow. Get hitched with non-profit organisations or startups (Investment In Indian Startups) as an advisor. Volunteer work can also add immense weight to your CV.
