While 2022 has been a difficult year for Bollywood at the box office, it has been a year for regional films especially Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu. This year, several Bollywood films starring A-Listers failed to touch the ₹100 crore mark , regional films like RRR, K.G.F Chapter 2, Kantara, and Ponniyin Selvan I soared as high as ₹1000 crore in domestic gross.
In light of this, we have a curated list of five highest grossing Tamil films of this year in descending order including Ponniyin Selvan I, Vikram, Beast, Valimai, and Etharkkum Thunindhavan.
Ponniyin Selvan I
Since its release, Mani Ratnamdirectorial Tamil film, Ponniyin Selvan I has been making headlines with its success. The film had already crossed the lifetime collection of this year’s highest grossing Hindi film The Kashmir Files within ten days of its release. It had almost touched the ₹100 crore mark over the first weekend with ₹92.50 crore nett. Starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Chiyaan Vikram, Trisha, and Shobhita Dhulipala, among others, Ponniyin Selvan: I is the first of the two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. Considered to be one of the greatest novels ever written in Tamil literature, Ponniyin Selvan came in five volumes with around 2,210 pages and narrated the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I.

With an ensemble star cast comprising Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil, and Vijay Sethupathi, the Tamil action thriller film Vikram released on June 3 at the theatres. The film became a huge critical and as well as commercial success and collected over ₹420-500 crore gross. A spiritual successor of the 1986 film of the same name, Vikram revolves around a black-ops squad led by Agent Vikram. In the film, Vikram aims at bringing down a drug syndicate group called Vetti Vagaiyara which is led by Sandhanam who wants the missing drugs to be delivered to his gang leader Rolex.
Marking actor Vijay’s 65th film, Beast is an action film that revolves around a former RAW agent's battle to rescue people who are held hostage in a shopping mall by some terrorists. The film also stars Pooja Hegde and Selvaraghavan. Released on April 13, the film went on to collect ₹236.90–250.05 crore gross worldwide.
The Tamil action thriller film Valimai stars Ajith Kumar, Karthikeya, Huma Qureshi, and Gurbani Judge. Produced by Boney Kapoor, the film follows ACP Arjun Kumar IPS (played by Ajith) who is assigned to track down a group of outlaw bikers after receiving a tip of their involvement in terrible dangerous crimes. The film collected ₹155.45–234 crore approximately.

Starring Suriya, Priyanka Arul Mohan, and Vinay Rai, the Tamil action drama film Etharkkum Thunindhavan follows a lawyer who goes after a gang that threatens women by making videos of them, led by a minister’s son. The film released on March 10 and collected ₹179–200 crore approximately.
