Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 Ending Explained: Who Won the Battle for Ba Sing Se?

The merciless Battle for Ba Sing Se results in a crushing victory for the Fire Nation and catastrophic loss for the Earth Kingdom, as well as Team Avatar. To the great sorrow of viewers, Prince Zuko cannot resist the influence of his education and actually betrays his own uncle, Iroh, in favour of his malicious sister, Azula. Together, the two capture Aang and Katara at the Crystal Caverns. With the odds against him and surrounded by the treacherous Dai Li servants who have now become Azula's followers, Aang has no choice but to take on all of his previous lives and become Avatar once again. He easily destroys the opposing force by using all four types of bending in an Avatar State, but his inherent peacefulness stops him from killing his opponent with the final blow. Taking advantage of Aang's hesitation, crafty Azula ruthlessly hits her brother through the heart with lightning, knocking out the Avatar and breaking the cycle of rebirth.

Even though a quick-witted Uncle Iroh steps in to stall the advancing forces until Katara, Sokka, and Toph can make their getaway with Aang's unconscious body, the city has been completely overrun. With the Dai Li now under the sway of Azula and the outer walls now torn down, the Fire Nation forces officially enter Ba Sing Se, taking total control of the one last sanctuary of the Earth Kingdom. In the wake of this crushing defeat, Katara urgently turns to the enchanted waters of the Northern Water Tribe's Spirit Oasis to restore Aang to life despite his critical condition. Although the miraculous water can get Aang to breathe again, he promptly goes into a very unstable state of unconsciousness. This sets up the bleakest conclusion to the season as Aang faces an uncertain future with both physical and psychological challenges before season 3 starts.
