Hemalatha Annamalai is an Indian technology entrepreneur and businesswoman known for her startup named Ampere Vehicles, where she worked as the founder and CEO. Hemalatha Annamalai is considered to be one of the pioneers in the electric vehicle (EV) industry of India. This was possible due to her production of affordable electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

Hemalatha Annamalai's Early Life and Education

Hemalatha has a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Computer Science from Government College of Technology (GCT), Coimbatore. Subsequently, Hemalatha pursued her Master’s degree in Software Engineering from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia.

Before venturing into the world of manufacturing, she had gained more than a decade of experience in the fields of IT and software, working in India, Singapore, and Australia. Her international experience and expertise in technology provided her with a sound base of analysis for business.

How Hemalatha Annamalai Started Ampere Electric

The concept of Ampere Electric originated from a business event held in Singapore in 2007 when a lecture on electric motors caught Hemalatha's attention and motivated her to create a sustainable transportation system as a solution to the growing pollution and rising fuel prices in India.

  • Establishment in Coimbatore (2008): She used her savings of ₹5 crore to set up Ampere Vehicles in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

  • Overcoming Manufacturing Obstacles: While the domestic EV supply chain was absent in India at that time, Hemalatha paid much attention to the indigenous manufacturing of her product, designing chargers, motors and battery intelligence herself.

  • Focusing on the Tier-2 and Rural Markets: Instead of targeting only metropolitan cities, the company offered to buy low-speed electric scooters for daily commuting, small trade and women living in rural and semi-urban locations.

  • Investment of Influential Personalities: Her groundbreaking idea won investment from business magnates, such as Ratan Tata, Kris Gopalakrishnan (Co-founder of Infosys) and Forum Synergies.

  • Acquisition by Greaves Cotton (2018): Engineering giant Greaves Cotton acquired a majority share in Ampere Vehicles, making it famous all around India.

  • Awards and Achievements of Hemalatha Annamalai

    She is known as one of the few women founders in hardware manufacturing and automotive industries in India. She was awarded for her excellent entrepreneurial career and contribution to the field of greentech.

    She mentors other women entrepreneurs and encourages angel investment and entrepreneurship in Southern India. She has also been the President of the TiE Coimbatore chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs.
