How can you break the cycle of revenge bedtime procrastination?
Dr Rachna Khanna Singh, a renowned Mental Health Professional, emphasises that one should 'start with looking beyond sleep itself and asking why one is staying up late in the first place' if they want to break the cycle of revenge sleep procrastination.
"Taking a step back to identify what's driving the behavior can make a big difference. Is it a heavy workload, academic stress, caregiving responsibilities, or simply not having enough time to relax? When people intentionally make space for hobbies, rest, or activities they genuinely enjoy during the day, the urge to "steal back" time at night often begins to fade. Setting healthy boundaries around work and daily responsibilities is just as important. When we're mentally exhausted or constantly under stress, our self-control tends to weaken," she adds.
She advises to start with simple habits and practical strategies like 'following a consistent bedtime routine, limiting screen time before bed, and choosing calming activities like reading, journaling, or meditating" can make it easier to unwind.
However, she further stresses that these strategies will work best when one has a lifestyle which supports enough rest and personal time.

A clear sign that you are unknowingly doing revenge bedtime procrastination is you are postponing sleep despite being tired. Dr Rachana Singh adds, "You know it's time for bed, but you keep choosing activities that feel enjoyable or help you unwind, even if only for a little while. It often starts with small thoughts such as, "I'll just watch one more episode," or "I'll check my phone for five minutes.” Before you know it, an hour, or even several hours have gone by. What seems like a small delay gradually turns into a nightly habit, often without you even noticing."
This habit can cause chronic sleep deprivation, daytime fatigue, irritability, poor concentration, emotional ups and downs, and lower productivity if continued over a period of time.
