From dishwashers and windshield wipers to Wireless transmission technology and computer algorithms and programming, there are many things that we use every day without knowing who invented them. Here are a few of the inventions by women.
7 Everyday Inventions by Women That Quietly Changed Your Daily Life
1. Dishwasher
Josephine Cochrane invented the dishwasher that we use to save time by not cleaning utensils by hand in the 19th century. She was a wealthy socialite and invented the dishwasher after her servant kept chipping her fine china.
2. Windshield wiper
Driving safely in rain by using windshield wipers? Thank Mary Anderson for that. She invented wipers in 1903, when she saw drivers struggling to drive in rain, sleet and snow, often sticking their heads out of the window to see.
3. Wireless transmission technology
You use WIFI and Bluetooth almost every day, but do you know the background of wireless transmission technology? It was invented by Hollywood actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr during WWII. This involved hopping between multiple radio frequencies so that enemies could not intercept messages.
4. Coffee filters
Melitta Bentz created coffee filters in 1908, and before that, people used to just let the coffee grounds float in their cups. She also founded the company Melitta, which still produces many coffee-related products.
5. Chocolate chip cookies
Ruth Wakefield, in 1938, at the Toll House Inn, created gooey and comforting chocolate chip cookies that are liked by most of the people around the world. She added chopped chocolate pieces, expecting them to melt and create chocolate cookies, but they stayed whole and created these iconic cookies.
6. Q-tips
Ziuta Gerstenzang came up with the idea of wrapping cotton around a toothpick to clean her baby’s ear. Her husband turned her idea into the Q-tips that we use every time we need to clean our ears.
7. Science fiction
Love to read science fiction books? A big thanks to Mary Shelly, who authored the famous Frankenstein that gave birth to a whole new genre of books and movies in 1818. It has been popular for over 200 years.
