The monsoon season not only brings a cool breeze and lots of greenery, but also adds to the humidity in the air, which means you have a hard time preventing any of the fruits and vegetables from getting spoiled. Vegetables such as cabbages absorb moisture at a very fast rate, making them go limp and mouldy within two days. But with these little storage tips, you can enjoy your cabbages without worrying about them going bad.

Easy Storage Tips To Keep Cabbage Fresh

1. Don't Wash or Chop First

Water is a major part of cabbage in the rainy season. Do not clean or cut your cabbage after purchasing it from the market. The protective outer layer of cabbage keeps its compact inner layer safe from the surrounding environment. Maintain the intact form of the cabbage and only clean or cut the portions needed for cooking.

2. Wrap It in Paper Towels or Cotton Cloth

In order to address this issue of moisture accumulation, ensure that the whole head is wrapped using dry paper towels or cotton kitchen towels when it comes to storage. Paper or fabric will act like a sponge and will soak up any moisture that may be formed inside the fridge. Ensure that you do a periodic check of your packing and replace any wet packing with dry packing.

3. Store in a Plastic Bag

The cabbage should be wrapped in a plastic bag that has holes for ventilation or a vegetable bag with holes in it. This guarantees the presence of air circulation and proper moisture without moisture retention. Make sure that the bag remains in the crisper compartment of your refrigerator at all times.

4. How to Store Half-Cut Cabbage Properly

If you do not use the entire head of cabbage, then you should always try to cover the cut face with beeswax wrap, cling film, or a piece of dry paper towel held in place by a rubber band. The moisture will very quickly evaporate from the cut face, and therefore the cut face becomes brown and soft due to this process.

5. Use Airtight Containers

In case you prefer having your veggies ready in advance, place a paper towel at the bottom of a dry and sealed container. Next, add your prepared cabbage, cover it with another paper towel, and tightly seal the container. This way, the presence of the two paper towels will help remove all moisture from your preparation, and it will stay fresh for 3 to 5 days.
