The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Women's team has achieved a feat that has eluded their male counterparts for years: winning a major cricket championship. While Virat Kohli and his team have reached the IPL final thrice, only to lose each time, Smriti Mandhana and her squad secured the franchise's first-ever title with a dominant eight-wicket victory over the Delhi Capitals in the WPL 2024 final.

The final, played at the Ferozeshah Kotla Ground in New Delhi on Sunday, saw RCB outclass the Capitals in all departments. A stellar bowling performance, spearheaded by Shreyanka Patil (4/12) and Sophie Molineux (3/20), restricted Delhi to a meagre 113 runs. The chase proved to be a comfortable affair, with Mandhana (31), Sophie Devine (32), and Ellyse Perry (35*) guiding RCB home with three balls to spare.

Emotional Celebration And Heartfelt Messages

Following the victory, a video call from Virat Kohli added to the joyous celebrations. Kohli congratulated Mandhana and the team on their success, further praising them as "Superwomen" in an Instagram post. In the post-match presentation, Mandhana expressed her gratitude to the management for their unwavering support throughout the season. She acknowledged the team's resilience, stating: "Last year taught us a lot of things, as a player, as a captain and as a team."superwoman

The triumph highlighted the contributions of several key players. Shreyanka Patil, who bagged the Purple Cap with 13 wickets, also earned the honour of the best Emerging Player. Ellyse Perry's consistent batting throughout the season earned her the Orange Cap with a total of 347 runs. However, Mandhana emphasised that the victory belonged to the entire team, commending their unity and determination throughout the competition.  She said: "Only thing I want to say is I am proud of the bunch."

Mandhana also acknowledged the unwavering support of the RCB fanbase, crediting them for their role in the team's success. The iconic chant "Ee Sala Cup Namde" (This year the cup is ours) finally resonated with truth for the RCB franchise, marking a significant milestone in their cricketing journey. Mandhana compared the win to potentially being amongst her top five sporting achievements, with only a World Cup victory surpassing it. She stated, "This win is definitely one of the top five maybe. A World Cup (win) would top it. I have a message for all the RCB fans, the most loyal fan base. Nothing would have been possible without their support."
