In recent years, Indian fashion has begun to wear the colours of sustainability. Handlooms are walking the runways, Instagram captions speak of “eco-friendly” wardrobes, and the conversation feels louder than ever. Yet, as someone who has spent years building a conscious fashion brand, I have also seen how easily this movement can turn into a pretty prop.
Sustainable Fashion
Sustainable fashion is not about what is “in” this season; it is about respect for the planet, for the hands that craft our garments, and for the people who wear them. Too often, the focus leans towards the visible gestures, a capsule collection here, a one-off “green” campaign there. The real work is slower, more deliberate, and far less glamorous. That is also what makes it truly powerful.
The life of a sustainable garment begins long before it reaches the shop floor. It starts with the fibre we choose, the dye that colours it, the hands that stitch it, and the waste we refuse to create. At Mayori, that means natural fabrics, low-impact dyes, and minimal-waste processes. This thoughtfulness is the backbone of every decision we take.

Growth Of Sustainable Fashion In India
India does not need to borrow sustainability as a concept, it already exists in our heritage. For centuries, we have embraced handloom weaving, natural dyeing, and clothing made to last. We have the opportunity now to carry these traditions forward in a way that feels relevant today. They need to be ethical, accessible, aspirational, and scalable.
Sustainability is a way of life, not just a single purchase. True change will come when, as consumers, we value quality over quantity, choose fewer and better pieces; when we take the time to care for them, repair, restyle and rewear them.
The future of Indian fashion will be determined by the responsibility and resourcefulness that is woven into our everyday choices, beyond the label of ‘eco’ on our clothes. For me, and for Mayori, this is not a passing trend; it is the fabric of our future.
