Are you a diamond aficionado, who loves investing in the shining precious stone, but is equally concerned about falling prey to fake ones? We understand, the bigger the investment, the more concerned one becomes about where they are about to spend their hard-earned money. However, you cannot always depend on luck to save you from thugs, especially when it comes to buying diamond ornaments. Hz spoke to a diamond expert, Mr Saurabh Khandelwal, who is the owner of Dhanvi Diamonds to take the insight to help you make the best of deals and shine with the beauty of the precious stone, diamond.

“When it comes to identifying real diamonds in the commercial market, there are many practical ways that help distinguish a diamond and CZ (cubic zirconia) or any other imitation gems and stones. But for that, you need to have scientific advancement and technical enhancement. Also, there are many synthetic diamonds available in the market, which cannot be identified by naked eyes. So, you need to have access certification by certified laboratories, which are only 2- 3 in India namely- GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, IGA-International Gemological Institute, and HRD the Hoge Raad Voor Diamant. Well, following these methods is quite tedious and calls for lengthy legal procedures. So, instead, try some really interesting and easy-to-follow tricks,” he recommended and further briefed about simple diamond-identifying hacks that can be applied to differentiate between CZ and diamonds.

Scratch Test

Scratch Test

You need to know that a real diamond will never get scratch, but cubic zirconia can easily get a one. So when you scratch cubic zirconia by a tweezer, it will leave behind a prominent abrade. This is a very popular test done on cubic zirconia, zircon, and diamonds. However, it is also a destructive test, as it can destroy cubic zirconia, as, after scratch test, it will lose its shine and luster (how to store jewellery right way).

Line Test

Diamond jewellery or stones have a property which is singly refractive. This means when light passes through a diamond piece it will remain a single line of light, but with cubic zirconia, light splits, as they are double refractive. The popular line test involves placing the stone on a single black line drawn on paper. When you will put cubic zirconia upside down on the paper, you will see the two lines splitting, instead of one line. And if you repeat the same procedure with a diamond piece, you will see a single line from the backside of the diamond. It's a great way to check if the diamond is real or fake.

Line Test

Dispersion Of Light

This is another popular test, wherein cubic zirconia tends to disperse light more than diamonds. We all know that diamonds have high dispersion, but in the technical terms, a diamond disperses light by 0.44 and cubic zirconia disperses light in 0.59 to 0.65, which is almost 30 to 40 percent higher than a diamond. It is easy to find when the stone is sparkling too much, it is dispersing too much and showing lots of spectrum of colours, which means it could be cubic zirconia.

Finger Affinity Test

Last but not the least is the finger affinity test, in which when you slide a finger over cubic zirconia, it would always be smoother than diamond. Diamond will show some friction to the figure in comparison to cubic zirconia, and it can help you easily identify which one is a diamond and which one is not.
