When Were Bras Invented?

The modern bra was officially born in 1914, when Mary Phelps Jacob patented her design in the United States. Frustrated by the restrictive corsets of the era, she created a simple undergarment using two silk handkerchiefs and a ribbon. This design was lighter and more comfortable than corsets, offering a revolutionary alternative for women. Jacob's invention laid the groundwork for the bras we use today.

The history of bras is deeply connected to societal trends and women’s changing roles. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods, women wore tight, fitted bodices that served to lift the bust and create an hourglass figure. Corsets, with steel or whale-bone inserts, became popular in the 16th century, pushing the bust up and creating a slim waistline. However, corsets were restrictive and often caused health issues due to their tight lacing.
