Kangana Ranaut Opens Up About Her Humble Roots, Says Her Journey Was Harder Than Convent-Educated Shah Rukh Khan

During a recent event in New Delhi last week, actress and politician Kangana Ranaut asserted that her career achievements are fundamentally different from those of typical Hindi film industry stars. Ranaut highlighted her simple, humble village background as a stark contrast to the "convent-educated" upbringing of actors like Shah Rukh Khan.

She noted the uniqueness of her success, stating, "Why did I get so much success? There is probably nobody else who came from a village and got such success in the mainstream. You talk about Shah Rukh Khan. They are from Delhi, convent-educated. I was from a village that nobody would have even heard of – Bhambla." She added, “"Maybe others may disagree, but I feel it’s because I am brutally honest, not just with people but with myself too.”

Kangana Ranaut’s Acting Journey

Kangana Ranaut originates from the small town of Bhambla in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district. She relocated to Mumbai during her teenage years to chase her aspirations in acting.

Ranaut made her initial screen appearance at the age of 19 in the 2006 film ‘Gangster’. She subsequently built her career on taking on unconventional characters in successful movies such as ‘Woh Lamhe’, ‘Life in a Metro’, ‘Fashion’, ‘Queen’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’.

Her most recent film to be released in theatres was ‘Emergency’ (2025), where she starred as the lead, portraying former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Ranaut also took on the roles of both director and producer for the film, which featured a supporting cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and the late Satish Kaushik.

The actor’s notable achievements include four National Film Awards and the Padma Shri, which is India’s fourth-highest civilian honour.

Kangana Ranaut’s Foray Into Hollywood

Kangana Ranaut is preparing for her debut in Hollywood with the horror-drama film, ‘Blessed Be the Evil’. For this project, she is collaborating with Lions Movies and director Anurag Rudra. The cast also includes Scarlet Rose Stallone, daughter of action star Sylvester Stallone, and Tyler Posey, known for the series ‘Teen Wolf’. This film is slated for release in 2027.
