Origin Of Guru Purab

    Guru Purab is the celebration of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev, who was born on Kartik Purnima in the year 1469 and every year, the Sikhs celebrate the festival on the Kartik Purnima. Guru Nanak Dev Ji is believed to have laid the foundation of the Sikh religion.

Significance Of Guru Purnima

    Guru Purab or Guru Purnima celebrates the life, battles, achievements and legacy of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, he was the first Sikh Guru and strongly believed that we can connect to the supreme power through dedicated payers.

Traditions Involved In Guru Purab

    On the day before the festival, a parade called Nagarkirtan is held, led by the Panj Pyare holding Nishan Sahib, the Sikh triangular flag. Followed by this is Akhand Path, a non-stop 48-hour recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib organised in gurudwaras.

Amrit Vela

    Amrit Vela(which is early in the morning) is believed to be the time when your soul directly connects to the almighty according to Guru Nanak Ji. Devotees pray to the lord chanting ‘Satnaam Shri Waheguru’

Timings

    The celebrations begin early in the morning a day before with Nagarkirtan followed by the Akhand Path and Langar. Some people also choose to observe a fast as a symbol of their devotion.
