Sonos announced Sonos 27 at an event in New York, introducing a new direction for its audio ecosystem rather than simply another software update. The platform brings AI controls, a redesigned app and new ways for speakers, headphones and soundbars to work together. The company is also bringing Sonos Play to India on September 8. The portable speaker is already listed on Sonos India at ₹31,999, with a charging base included in the box.
Sonos 27 Price And Launch: What Is Coming To India?
- Sonos Play India price: ₹31,999
- India availability: September 8
- Sonos Play battery: Up to 24 hours
- Water resistance: IP67
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
- Charging: Charging Base included; 18W or higher USB C/PD adapter sold separately
- New Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra: Launching globally on September 29
The ChatGPT Connection Is More Than Voice Commands
The biggest Sonos 27 change is 27mcp, which allows AI assistants such as ChatGPT to interact with a Sonos system. Instead of treating the speaker as a separate device that only responds to fixed commands, users can use an AI assistant to control compatible audio experiences.
Sonos is also introducing 27voice, its own AI powered voice assistant focused on music. The company says the system is designed around natural requests, making it possible to ask for music based on moods or situations rather than relying only on specific commands.
The Interesting Part: Speakers Can Change Their Job
One of the less obvious changes in Sonos 27 is Sonos Fabric, the technology behind how compatible devices understand their position and work together.
This enables Portable Surrounds, allowing compatible portable speakers such as Sonos Play and Move 2 to be used as rear speakers for a home theatre setup. The idea is simple: a portable speaker does not have to remain permanently assigned to the TV. It can move around the house and take on a surround role when required.
That makes Sonos 27 less about adding another control screen and more about making the entire speaker network behave like one system.
New App, Beam Ultra And Ace Ultra Complete The Sonos 27 Push
The redesigned Sonos app brings updated navigation and controls, while the company is using the new platform to connect its upcoming hardware more closely with existing products.
Beam Ultra is a new compact soundbar with 7.1.2 channel Dolby Atmos, while Ace Ultra is a new flagship headphone with enhanced noise cancellation and direct Sonos system connectivity. Ace Ultra also introduces Headphone Linking, designed to move listening between the Sonos system and headphones more naturally. Both products are scheduled for September 29.
For India, however, Sonos Play is the immediate development to watch on September 8. Its combination of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 24 hour battery life, IP67 protection, replaceable battery and automatic Trueplay makes it more than a conventional Bluetooth speaker and its ability to join a Sonos home theatre setup gives the India launch an added significance.
Will Sonos 27 Work With Existing Sonos Speakers?
- Sonos 27 is designed for products running through the S2 app, while older hardware dependent on the S1 app will not get the new platform experience.
- Not every Sonos 27 feature will work on every compatible product, as some functions require newer hardware capabilities.
- The 27mcp ChatGPT integration is particularly interesting because it can control existing Sonos products through an AI assistant, rather than requiring users to buy a new speaker.
- This means the September 8 update is not simply about new hardware; existing Sonos owners could get a noticeably different way of controlling their current audio setup.
- Sonos is also bringing back practical controls such as lock screen volume and playback controls, while system health tools and presets are planned for later this year.
