The biggest Sonos 27 change is 27mcp, which allows AI assistants such as ChatGPT to interact with a Sonos system. Instead of treating the speaker as a separate device that only responds to fixed commands, users can use an AI assistant to control compatible audio experiences.

Sonos is also introducing 27voice, its own AI powered voice assistant focused on music. The company says the system is designed around natural requests, making it possible to ask for music based on moods or situations rather than relying only on specific commands.

One of the less obvious changes in Sonos 27 is Sonos Fabric, the technology behind how compatible devices understand their position and work together.

This enables Portable Surrounds, allowing compatible portable speakers such as Sonos Play and Move 2 to be used as rear speakers for a home theatre setup. The idea is simple: a portable speaker does not have to remain permanently assigned to the TV. It can move around the house and take on a surround role when required.

That makes Sonos 27 less about adding another control screen and more about making the entire speaker network behave like one system.

The redesigned Sonos app brings updated navigation and controls, while the company is using the new platform to connect its upcoming hardware more closely with existing products.

Beam Ultra is a new compact soundbar with 7.1.2 channel Dolby Atmos, while Ace Ultra is a new flagship headphone with enhanced noise cancellation and direct Sonos system connectivity. Ace Ultra also introduces Headphone Linking, designed to move listening between the Sonos system and headphones more naturally. Both products are scheduled for September 29.

For India, however, Sonos Play is the immediate development to watch on September 8. Its combination of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 24 hour battery life, IP67 protection, replaceable battery and automatic Trueplay makes it more than a conventional Bluetooth speaker and its ability to join a Sonos home theatre setup gives the India launch an added significance.
