Huawei Mate XT 2 Launch Today: New Tri-Fold Smartphone With Upgraded Design And Powerful Features

The Huawei Mate XT 2 launch event is scheduled for September 7 at 2:30 PM China time. In India, that translates to 12:00 PM IST. Huawei has not yet confirmed the final China price in the information available before the event. Pre-orders opened on August 31, with the phone listed in 16GB+512GB and 16GB+1TB versions, while higher-end configurations include a privacy display and 2TB storage.

For Indian buyers, there is currently no confirmed India launch date or official India price. The previous Mate XT eventually reached selected international markets, so a global rollout remains possible, but Huawei has not confirmed it for the Mate XT 2.

The Mate XT 2 moves away from the original Mate XT's Z-shaped folding system. Its new U-shaped inward-folding “wing” structure brings both sides inward, helping keep the flexible display protected when the phone is closed.

Huawei says the new architecture also improves balance, hinge reliability and handling. More importantly, the phone now gets a dedicated outer display, making it more practical to use without unfolding the entire device.

Huawei is offering 16GB RAM across the announced configurations. Storage starts at 512GB and goes up to 2TB, with the 2TB model paired with a stylus and privacy-screen technology.

The company's LingShield privacy display is another notable addition. Instead of relying only on software, the hardware is designed to restrict viewing angles while keeping the screen clear for the person using it. This could be particularly useful when the huge folding display is used in trains, airports or other public places.

The Mate XT 2 is being introduced alongside HarmonyOS 7, giving Huawei an opportunity to demonstrate how its software handles a three-screen device. The launch is officially titled the HarmonyOS 7 | HUAWEI Mate XT 2 and All-Scenario New Product Launch.

One fresh detail ahead of today's event is that Huawei executive Richard Yu has confirmed Chinese superstar Liu Dehua will attend the launch. That makes the event more than a routine phone unveiling and adds another major spotlight to Huawei's biggest foldable launch of the year.

The bigger story: Huawei is not merely making its first tri-fold thinner or faster. With protected inward folding, an outer display, hardware-level privacy and up to 2TB storage, the Mate XT 2 is attempting to make the tri-fold format feel more like a practical phone than an experimental gadget.
