    Indian constitution not only had founding fathers but founding mothers too. This Republic Day, learn about 15 women whose contributions shaped our constitution.

Sarojini Naidu

    Sarojini Naidu was a feminist who advocated for women’s rights during the drafting of the constitution. She also played a crucial role in the independence of our country.

Dakshayani Velayudhan

    Dakshayani Velayudhan called for the decentralisation of the first draft submitted by Dr BR Ambedkar in 1948.

Begum Aizaz Rasul

    Begum Aizaz Rasul was the only Muslim woman to be a part of the Constituent Assembly. She was also the Minister of Social Welfare and Minorities.

Hansa Jivraj Mehta

    Hansa Jivraj Mehta was a reformist, writer, independence activist and educator. She was a part of the committee that drafted the fundamental rights we enjoy today.

Leela Roy

    Leela Roy fought for the rights to education for girls while the Constitution of India was getting drafted.

Durgabai Deshmukh

    Durgabai Deshmukh was part of the Constituent Assembly as well as the Planning Commission of India.

Ammu Swaminathan

    Ammu Swaminathan was among 15 women who helped draft the Indian Constitution. She was titled ‘Mother of the Year’ in 1975.

Renuka Ray

    Renuka Ray was a Padma Bhushan awardee who always advocated for the welfare of minority communities.

Kamla Chaudhry

    Kamla Chaudhry participated in several movements against the Britishers. After the drafting of the Constitution, she was selected as a member of the Provincial Government of India.

Purnima Banerjee

    Purnima Banerjee was a part of the Constituent Assembly between 1946 and 1950. She worked with people living in the rural parts of India.

Rajkumari Amrit Kaur

    Amrit Kaur supported the proposal for the Uniform Civil Code while the Constitution was getting drafted. She advocated for women's rights.

Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit

    Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was the first woman to hold a position in the cabinet in the pre-independence era. She was a part of the Constituent Assembly too.

Annie Mascarene

    Annie Mascarene was the first woman to serve as the Member of Parliament post-independence era.

Sucheta Kriplani

    Sucheta Kriplani was a freedom fighter who sang Vande Mataram during the Independence Session of the Constituent Assembly.

Malati Choudhury

    Malati Choudhury was someone who did not agree with the ideologies of many members of the Constituent Assembly, she advocated for role education for poor people.
