A 62-year-old woman reveals how she fed herself for a month for free. The woman says that she took food items from the garbage cans kept outside the supermarket. She claimed that people also throw fresh food items in the garbage, picking up which she survived for a month without having to buy any food.

Meet Jill Bennett

The woman's name is Jill Bennett and she hails from Northampton,  East Midlands, England. Bennett says she took 'waste' goods from outside supermarkets for a month.

Since she began waiting outside shops for leftover stock to be thrown out, 'freegan' Jill Bennett, 62, from Northampton, claims that she has been eating three meals a day without paying a penny and donating heaps of food to her local community.

Horrified At Food Wastage

Jill was horrified at the prospect of fresh food being thrown away so frequently that she began waiting outside supermarkets on Sundays at the 'throwing out time' to catch the workers before they disposed of the food items.

For the past month, she has only eaten what she found, which included lamb chops, whole chickens, ready dinners, curries, apple pies, and luxury chocolates.

Free Food For A Month

She said, “I've eaten for free for a month now and I've eaten better, fresher food than I've ever eaten. I eat fresh food every day.

'Yesterday I had scrambled eggs on toast, all free, for lunch I had potato, spinach and tomato curry, the only things I had myself were oil and spices and in the evening, I had roasted vegetables and couscous and apple pie.”

Ten Bags Of Discarded Food

She added, “Every day I eat really well and I've got piles of fresh fruit and veg. I find meat, lamb chops, whole chickens, ready meals, cakes, chocolate, fresh fruit and veg, all in date and every week, that's what it is.

Jill was doing her usual grocery shopping at her neighbourhood supermarket when she noticed an employee preparing to discard more than ten bags of groceries and decided to intervene.

Jill was 'amazed' to see more than £200 worth of food that had not yet expired when the worker handed it back.

She further told, “I went to another supermarket in the next village. I went in the bin that time and found about £200 worth of chocolates and flowers that had been thrown away. All the chocolates were in date and all the flowers were fresh so I came back to where I live and I gave them all away.”

She believes that it is a pragmatic and politically right thing to do. She is annoyed by the amount of food that’s wasted every day and that she believes something needs to be done about it.
