Giving birth to a child is one of the most wonderful feelings a mother experiences. However, caring for babies is a lot of effort that may be stressful and exhausting. Many new mothers struggle to maintain their mental health during this period. Here are some tips that will help you maintain your mental health after giving birth to a new life.
1. Take Proper Sleep
New babies can be notorious for disrupting your sleep but you have to manage that for your mental well-being. You can find a relative, friend, babysitter or someone whom you can trust with your baby while you sleep. Getting adequate rest is very important because when you’re tired, you don't think clearly, which can negatively impact your mood.
Not taking care of themselves after giving birth is a common mistake that new mothers make which can cause negative effects on their mental health. Exercise as often as you can after getting the go ahead from your medical provider. Exercising in the gym is not the only way to exercise but you can also walk around the park with your kid in a stroller which can be an easy way to get some exercise and fresh air. Even if you don't have a lot of time, consider working out for 10 minutes several times throughout the day.
3. Eat Well
Eating nutritious foods will help not only in the maintenance of good mental health, but also in the recovery process after birth. If you're breastfeeding, this is especially important. Focus on nutrient-dense snacks and meals that are high in protein, iron, and fibre. Developing a healthy eating habit can help you feel better and provide your body with the right nutrition you need. Eat lots of good vegetables, fruits, and proteins, as well as drink eight to ten glasses of water each day. If you're breastfeeding, you'll need 12-14 glasses of water every day.
4. Create Time For Yourself
Ask your partner or another trusted adult to watch the baby for an hour or two while you take a break. Listen to music; it can make you feel good and remind you of your true self. Music has been shown to have a positive effect on brain function, making you feel better. You can also meet up with friends or breathe fresh air outside in the park. It will relax your mind and help you cope with stress.
5. Be kind to yourself
Don't put too much pressure on yourself with the perfect routine and packed schedule. Ask for help from other people whenever you think you need it. Newborns have a way to throw all routine and predictability out the window and it will take time for both of you to understand each other.
These are some ways that new mothers may practice after giving birth to a new life for maintenance of good mental health. If you think these tips are not helping you enough, you must consult a doctor.
