In the last month, we have seen a sudden rise in the number of COVID-19 infections by the Omicron variant. Omicron was first detected in South Africa and is more transmissible than any other variant. It has now taken over the world.

However, the variant is believed to be milder than previous variants like Delta. As far as the symptoms of the Omicron variant are concerned they are quite different from the strains which took over earlier.

The symptoms of Omicron variant of COVID-19 are quite like common cold. That's one reason why many of us might not have even realised that we were infected by the variant.

We spoke to Dr. Mukesh Singh, Senior Resident, Delhi, and asked what are common signs of Omicron. He said, "Signs like fever(mild-moderate) in an initial period like 1-3 days, generalised bodyache, malaise, loss of taste /smell, headache, cold and cough with abdominal pain (may or may not be with loose stools) are some common conditions.

He further shared that all these symptoms can be usually managed by NSAIDs and antidiarrheal and that's why many people aren't opting for screening for coronavirus and going for self-isolation. The expert shared that because the symptoms are mild, they can be treated at home. This will also help in less hospitalisation. Vaccination has also helped in reducing the severity of Omicron cases.

Self Care After Getting Infected By Omicron Variant

We further asked the expert what self-care measures should one take while at home other than taking medications. He said, "Self-monitor for temperature, cough or breathlessness, spo2), keep yourself hydrated, take care of your hygiene, inhale steam, eat a healthy diet and rest in isolation in a single room with attached washroom and avoid contact with any family members or friends."
