So, for us, the food becomes inedible after the expiry date. However, do you know, some foods are safe for consumption even after they reach the expiry date? Yes, there are foods that you can keep even after they have crossed the best before date. Read on.
Salt is one of the most common ingredients used in our kitchens. Do you know salt is used as a food preservative? It helps in dehydrating foods so that they can be stored for a longer time. Regular old salt never goes bad. However, salts that come with added ingredients like iodine have a shorter shelf life.
There are a lot of factors that contribute to honey's long life. Honey has low moisture levels, sugar content, excessive acidity, and natural gluconic acid which makes it last for really long. Also, honey dehydrates bacteria which is why it becomes its own preservative. Here, we are talking about raw honey and not the ones that come with added ingredients.
3. White Rice
If properly stored in an air tight container away from moisture and heat, white rice stays good forever. White rice has low oil content which helps it stay for long.
We can't really imagine our kitchens without this ingredient. Sugar too can be stored forever but there is one condition. It should always be kept away from moisture and heat. With time, you may notice a change in the texture of sugar but it will not completely expire.
Cornstarch is commonly used to thicken gravies, make sauces, soups. This is another food that can last forever. However, the only condition is that it doesn't get wet. It should be stored in a cool and dry place.
6. Soy Sauce
Soy sauce is commonly used while stir-frying vegetables, making noodles. It gives a great flavour and colour to our dishes. Do you know soy sauce has a high amount of salt present in it? Salt works like a preservative that doesn't let the sauce go bad. If stored in a dark cupboard, it can be used for a really long time.
7. Maple Syrup
Pure maple syrup can be kept in your kitchen forever. The syrup bottle needs to be kept unopened. However, if you have opened it, it can be refrigerated in an air-tight container and it will stay good for a long time.
White vinegar, apple cider vinegar do not expire. These foods are acidic in nature and are self-preserving. They don't even need refrigeration.
9. Pure Vanilla Extract
A commonly used ingredient while baking, pure vanilla extract has a really long shelf life. It contains alcohol which increases the shelf life. If you keep it properly sealed, vanilla extract won't ever go bad.
If you have dry pasta or noodles prepared using refined flour or maida then they can last forever.
